Today, computers are used in every household or office building, whether they be used for work or for play. They can store millions of bytes of data, execute millions of instructions per second and can process graphics almost equal to reality. Even still, they are always improving. In recent years, a new computing technology has been emerging: DNA Computing. It was first shown in 1994, when Leonard Adleman showed how a DNA-based computer could solve a Hamiltonian Path problem in 7 summits. Nowadays though, DNA data storage seems extremely close to being made available.

A single gram of DNA can store around 215 Petabytes, or 215 thousand times the size of the average hard drive. This means you can store all of the world’s data (18 Zettabytes) in 83.7 kg worth of DNA, which is only 3 kg off of the weight of the average North American.

The Problems

However, everything has its faults. DNA computers, whilst they can solve both simple and complex problems, they are somewhat slower than our current computers. At the moment, most DNA computers are also unable to be programmed. In 2019, there was exploratory research into re-programmable DNA, but it isn’t currently in wide use in the field.

DNA computing also seems like it will be quite expensive in the future, but we’ll know within time. Luckily for us though, DNA computing seems as if it will advance far ahead of the current computing we use today.
