Among Us is an online multiplayer game similar to games such as “Werewolf” and “Mafia” which released in 2018. In Among Us, the roles are known as the Crewmates and the Impostors. The Crewmates have to complete tasks or vote out the Impostors, whilst the Impostors have to try and sabotage or eliminate the Crew. There are three current maps: The Skeld, Polus and Mira HQ. These maps don’t change the gameplay much other than changing the layout of vents (shortcuts for the impostors) and the tasks.
Due to the simplicity of the game, even low range laptops or mobile phones can run it. This, combined with the low price of £3.99 on PC or Free on mobile, allows many different people to access the game. This is part of the reason as to why it has blown up on Twitch. Many different streamers are now collaborating in order to host full games, both growing themselves as streamers and the game as a whole. Others believe that the Coronavirus lock down contributed heavily to the success and popularity of the game, which is also a valid point to consider.
It isn’t a flawless game, by far. Without the right kinds of people, the game can become a slog or could become too toxic to enjoy. It can both build friendships and trust, or burn bridges between people with ease. Even still, the game is extraordinarily fun to play with trusted friends.
Personally, I believe that Among Us is a great game, built on deception and trust. Whilst playing it with the right people, you can have a lot of fun and kill time easily. It contains fun mini-games, large customisation for each round and is simple to play.
