Introduction

In this report I am going to discuss different image file formats, where they are used and there advantages and disadvantages.

There are two different type of images; raster images are made of pixels amd vector images which use the CPU power and are based on mathematical calculations, meaning that the images look cartoonish.

 

Image File Type Where Used Advantages Disadvantages
1.       GIF Mainly on the internet because of the small file sizes. This gives users the availability to download gifs quickly and easily. Multi layers that have a transparent background and can create animations. The GIFs have poor quality.
2.       PNG Used on the internet. They are like JPEGs but the quality is much better. They are much better quality. They are bigger than JPEGs, so they take up more storage space.
3.       JPEG Used on the internet. They are still images as they only utilize one layer. Only one layer used, so there is no transparent background. If there is no background colour then it is turned to white by default.
4.       .AI An .AI file is a file that is used on the software Adobe Illustrator. Don’t risk any copyright issues. Cannot access this on the go.
5.       SWF Used with Adobe Flash for flash games. Easy to make simple animations. In order to view this format you need adobe flash
6.       PSD Used for Adobe Photoshop. This is the common format for the software. You can save large amounts of data. Not many programs work with this
7.       PDF A PDF is a document that can be over over the internet. People can easily view your work. People can copy your work.
8.       CDR A CDR file is the common format used for the software CoralDRAW. Very good photo editing software. People can take credit for your work.
9.       TIFF TIFF is a still image file, but is instead a vector image. They are higher quality then both JPEGs and PNGs, hence why they are used for bigger images. They are the best quality for still images. Requires a lot of space to store and send multiple TIFF files.
10.    PXR This is the common file format that is used for Pixar’s animations. Is a vector file, so it’s great for graphics It’s not available on the internet, so no one can see the work.
