What do they know so far?

The suspicion is that the seals died of starvation after migrating fish, but officials and activists will further investigate the case.
More than 7,000 seals have been found dead on the coast of the African country, an environmental conservation group in the country said on Friday (23). The causes are still under investigation.

According to the non-profit organization Ocean Conservation of Namibia (OCN), thousands of young birds had already been found dead last week on the Pelican Point peninsula – a tourist destination known for harboring marine animals.
Marine biologist Naude Dreyer told Reuters that OCN investigations identified a rapid increase in the number of females killed, in addition to the young. According to her, more seals may have died.

It is not yet known what may have caused so many deaths. But biologists suspect that the seals starved to death because of fish migration. Other reasons, such as the spread of some toxic substance or a disease among animals, are not ruled out.

Namibia’s Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources said it had sent samples of seal bodies to South Africa to assess what may have caused the deaths.
